This site is implemented using an ASP.NET blogging engine (dasBlog). I like the power and flexibility I get from using an ASP.NET web, but one thing I don't like is its lack of xhtml 1.0 compliance. I am currently researching ways to make this site more web-standards-friendly. Here are some great links on the subject in case you are interested:

What Video Game Character Are You? I am Mario.I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. What Video Game Character Are You?
Those who know me are probably not surprised by this.

If you haven't already been watching it, you are missing some of the most engaging original drama on television in recent memory. It's not a re-hash of the same old cop-drama or hospital soap. In a way Lost has been sort of genre-defying. The story seems to lie somewhere between survival epic and science fiction, with overtones right out of "Lord of the Flies".

Last night the final episode of the first season aired and as expected, it was quite the cliff hanager. Very little of anything new was really revealed, and yet you were still left feeling that you were one step closer to learning the secret of the island. More importantly though, the characters were developed further.  This, and I think this alone is what separates Lost from the rest of the fodder we normally find on television; the characters are real, three-dimensional characters with all the flaws, foibles and feelings required to make them come alive.

On the subject of predictability, one of the things I really like about this show is that even when being predictable, it still attempts to take television in a new and fresh direction. Giving people what they need, rather than what has satisified them in the past is another hallmark of what lifts this show above the others. Knowing full-well that the mysteries of Lost may never be revealed, I still can't wait for its next season!

I am also gratified to see that for once, something intelligent and well-crafted has risen to the level of "smash hit".  Bravo to ABC for the vision and confidence to bring something to the network airwaves that departs from the usual formulaic nonsense we've grown so accustomed to.

Just heard that David "Fathead" Newman is in town tonight!  He is playing two shows at the Montage Grill (7:00pm/9:00pm).  Its $23 at the door, and $20 in advance.

If you've never heard him before, Fathead is an amazing sax and flute musician, truly one of the greats of jazz!  Among other, Fathead played with the great Ray Charles.

So I got flickr set up such that I can blog photos (and accompanying text such as this) directly from flickr.

They even let you fully customize the HTML/CSS that gets generated. Neat stuff! Good thing too, because thanks to the guillotine bug in IE, I couldnt get the entries to look right until I put the img block into a small table (which is just to sort of simulate float:left for the img).

I can't figure out whats wrong with this page.  If I look at it in IE and move the mouse around and hover over some of the links on the page, occasionally my Blog items will vanish.  If I mouse over them (or refresh the page) sometimes they return, but its quite annoying.Firefox doesn't suffer from this problem, I wonder if my CSS is slightly off and causes problems in IE, or if this is a strange IE bug.

Anyone?

Edit: Well, I found out what the strange problem was.  Apparrently I was caught by the infamous IE/Win Guillotine Bug. This nasty bug was causing div's that were 'float'ed to be clipped off the page entirely. Anyhow I worked around that problem for the moment so the page should look better now.

Okay, so this is my first attempt at theming dasBlog.  It wasn't easy either -- and I still have many kinks to work out.

I am also currently using w.Bloggar to upload blog items remotely in a nice little windows app.  It still seems to have some issues, but in general it does the job.

Now I just need to figure out the best solution for display photos on a custom page on this site.  If I had my druthers, I'd just post links into flickr and host the photos there (disk space is a premium here at frankcaico.com).  Anyone have any ideas?

Why, oh why can't I find a piece of smart technhology that has both form and function.

I really like the technical features and customizability (sic) of DasBlog, but unfortunately all the themes (and even some of the web user-controls) are coded in some of the worst html/css around.

Well, I guess it hardly matters, because until Visual Studio 2005 comes out (and with it ASP.NET 2.0), it's too much of a pita to get ASP.NET websites to be xhtml strict.  Especially on a server I don't have control over.
